Freedom is worth carrying forward.

William H. Carney was born into slavery in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1840. As a young man, he escaped slavery and made his way north to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he began building a life in freedom. When Black Americans were finally permitted to enlist in the Union Army, Carney chose to fight—not only for his country, but, as he later wrote, for his “oppressed brothers.” He enlisted in the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in 1863.

That July, during the 54th's assault on Fort Wagner, the regiment's color bearer fell under heavy fire. Carney seized the American flag and carried it forward to the fort. Despite suffering multiple wounds, he kept the colors aloft during the retreat and brought them safely back to Union lines. His actions that night became the earliest actions by an African American to be recognized with the Medal of Honor.

This design reimagines that moment through the 6 Sons Supply lens. Carney stands wounded but unbroken, raising the flag above the battlefield while the men of the 54th fight around him. The futuristic weapons deliberately pull the scene out of 1863—a reminder that the courage to defend freedom, and the responsibility to carry it forward, belong to every generation.

There's a deeper tension in Carney's story that makes the image especially powerful: a man born enslaved risked his life to keep the American flag from falling, even while the nation represented by that flag was still struggling to extend its promise of liberty to people like him. That's the idea behind the artwork.
